How to Choose the Right Wedding Officiant for Your Ceremony

Your officiant does more than pronounce you married. Here's how to find someone who makes your ceremony feel like you.

You've found your person. You've picked a date. Maybe you've even found the perfect venue.

Now comes a question that deserves more attention than it sometimes gets: Who's going to marry you?

Your wedding officiant is the person who guides you through one of the most meaningful moments of your wedding day. They're the voice welcoming your guests, the person standing beside you as you exchange promises, and often the one helping everyone breathe when the nerves kick in.

So how do you choose the right one?

Here are seven things I'd encourage every couple to consider.

1. Choose Someone You Feel Comfortable With

This might be the most important tip of all.

Your officiant should make you feel at ease. You should be able to laugh together, ask questions, share your ideas, and be yourselves.

When you have that connection, your ceremony feels less like a performance and more like a genuine celebration of your relationship.

My advice: Schedule a conversation before booking. You'll learn a lot about whether someone is the right fit just by talking with them.

2. Decide What Kind of Ceremony You Want

Not every couple wants the same kind of wedding ceremony—and that's a wonderful thing!

Some couples want something short, simple, and meaningful. Others want a personalized ceremony filled with stories, laughter, and heartfelt moments.

Before choosing an officiant, think about the atmosphere you'd love to create.

Would you prefer something traditional? Romantic? Lighthearted? Faith-based? Nonreligious? A little of everything?

Ask your potential officiant whether they can accommodate your vision.

The best ceremony isn't necessarily the longest or most elaborate. It's the one that feels right for the two of you.

3. Ask About Personalization

One of my favorite parts of officiating weddings is learning what makes each couple unique.

Maybe you met in the most unexpected way. Maybe your first date was a complete disaster. Maybe you've built a beautiful life together through challenges, adventures, and countless ordinary moments.

Those details are what make your love story yours.

If personalization matters to you, ask whether your officiant will take time to get to know you and incorporate your story into the ceremony.

At The Bari Nook, my Custom Love Story Ceremony is designed around exactly that idea.

4. Understand What's Included in the Price

Wedding officiant pricing can vary depending on experience, location, travel, rehearsal involvement, and how much customization is included.

Before booking, ask:

  • What does the ceremony package include?

  • Is a planning consultation included?

  • Can we write our own vows?

  • Is there an additional rehearsal fee?

  • Are there travel charges?

  • What happens if our ceremony starts late?

Clear answers help you compare services fairly and avoid surprises.

At The Bari Nook, wedding ceremony packages start at $300, with options for personalized ceremonies and premarital preparation.

5. Look for Someone Who Can Handle the Unexpected

Here's something you might not think about when hiring an officiant: weddings don't always go exactly according to plan.

Sometimes the music doesn't start.

Sometimes a decoration comes loose.

Sometimes a family member needs extra reassurance.

And sometimes the ceremony is running behind schedule.

I've experienced all of those things—and more!

I've helped calm families during a wedding-day health crisis, tracked down a DJ when the entrance music went missing, climbed a ladder to fix flowers falling from an arch, and even stepped in to take photos while officiating when a couple's photographer was no longer available.

None of those things were technically part of the ceremony script.

But I believe being an officiant means showing up for your couple, not simply showing up to speak.

When you're interviewing officiants, ask how they handle unexpected situations. Their answer may tell you just as much as their sample ceremony.

6. Check Reviews and Communication

A beautiful website is a wonderful start, but you also want to know what it's like to work with someone.

Read reviews when available. Pay attention to comments about professionalism, warmth, reliability, and how comfortable couples felt during the ceremony.

Notice how the officiant communicates with you, too.

Do they answer your questions clearly? Explain the process? Help you understand the next steps?

You deserve someone who treats your wedding as important long before the ceremony begins.

7. Remember That Your Officiant Sets the Tone

Your wedding ceremony is more than the part you do before the reception.

It's the moment you make your promises.

It's where your guests hear your story.

It's where two lives are publicly celebrated as one shared journey.

Your officiant helps shape how that moment feels.

You don't need someone who steals the spotlight. You need someone who helps the two of you shine.

And when you find that person, you'll know.

A Final Thought: Choose Someone Who Cares About Your Story

Wedding planning comes with plenty of decisions, and it's easy to get caught up in comparing prices, packages, and timelines.

Those things matter.

But don't forget to ask yourself one simple question:

Do I trust this person to stand beside us on our wedding day?

Because your officiant isn't just another vendor. They're part of one of the most meaningful moments of your lives.

Choose someone who understands that.
